I felt the same initially, but now like the usage of tags for all meta-data because it keeps the text format cleaner, and external parsing simpler. If you are bothered by the amount of typing that has to be done to check something off, have you tried using Cmd-D? That toggles something as @done.
I agree with keeping how it is. The "+" symbol at the beginning of the line might be confusing as in lists it more often means that if you click on it there is something to be expanded.
When I'm working on paper I tend to use a dash (-) for an uncompleted task and then turn the dash into a plus (+) when it's completed. I picked this up from something I read on 43 Folders a while back.
I implemented this for the Vim plugin but took it back out in order to stay consistent with TaskPaper itself.
Actually I was thinking "√" (Option+V). And I'm not a fan of a strike-thru. I know this is all very nit-picky. Maybe version 2 will allow configuration.
V2 allows you to style text however you want (size, weight, color, font, underline . . .), that includes the @done tag, so no more strike throughs if you don't like them.
