Writeroom's Typewriter Scroll

Posted February 26, 2008 by Tim Visher in writeroom typewriter scrolling

Hello Everyone,

Not sure if this is the correct area to post this, but one of the things that I dislike most about Writeroom is that I cannot move the scroll all the way to the top of the window. That actually says a lot about the beauty of the application because that's all I can come up with to dislike about it. Is there a way to get that rolled into the next update maybe? I'm not sure why the decision was made the way it was but it seems to me that it would be a fairly trivial development to make that sliding scale go from bottom to top instead of bottom to middle.

What do you think?

Can you describe this a bit more, or maybe post a screenshot somewhere? I'm not sure that I understand what you want. Also it may be that this is already possible, have you played with "Full Screen" settings, specifically "pixel scroll view top / bottom padding" and "pixels page extra top padding"?

Jesse:

I believe this is the setting he is referencing.

I think the idea is to have it adjustable throughout the entire height of the window (so, the range would be from bottom to top instead of bottom to middle)

Humm, that would be a bit odd though wouldn't it? Then as soon as you typed a line it would disappear off the screen. I guess someone might want that, but it seems like a bit of an odd case to me. Do people really thing this would be useful?

I'm with you - however, it does smack of the old-fashioned word processing devices - Im not sure what they were called, but it was a typewriter where you could review an entire line before it was committed to paper. Had a nifty little LCD screen and an automatic carriage return and line feed. Pretty swank for the mid 80's... not exactly hot technology now, though.

I guess to me it seems like the idea behind the Typewriter feature is to put the writing in the "meat" of the screen. Having it at the top would seem counter-productive (as you lose all ability to glance up at the last few lines). I don't see the usefulness, but it seems a fairly simple thing to include. I myself would be interested in the application for this.
